Technical University of Munich – Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence
Established in October 2019, the Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (IEAI) is dedicated to promoting the importance of AI ethics and the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence. Its mission is to explore the ethical challenges arising from the development, deployment, and societal impact of AI-enabled technologies, with the aim of ensuring that AI contributes to a positive and sustainable future.
Through cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and practical applications, the IEAI brings together researchers and practitioners to translate ethical principles and theoretical insights into practice. The Institute provides a unique platform for diverse stakeholders to exchange perspectives, build partnerships, and collaboratively address the complex ethical challenges associated with AI in a comprehensive and forward-looking manner.
Role within AIRIS
TUM coordinates Work Package 6 (WP6) and leads the development of the AIRIS ELSI framework. WP6 focuses on key ethical and societal dimensions of AI, including ethics, fairness, trust, and bias detection. TUM ensures that responsible deployment, governance, privacy, compliance with AI legislation, and societal acceptance are systematically integrated into the project’s methods and other work packages. It also supports the dissemination and long-term sustainability of the ethical frameworks developed within the project.
In addition, TUM is responsible for internal monitoring and impact assessments, helping to track the implementation and effectiveness of the project’s ethical and societal objectives.
